Grants to Support Iowa Justice System Response to COVID-19 and Drug-Related Crime

The Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP) has announced two new federal grants to: respond to coronavirus-related criminal justice system needs in Iowa communities; and help local and state agencies address drug-related behaviors.

ODCP has awarded a total of $2,493,850 in grants from the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding (CESF) program to 26 agencies, and another $1,918,990 to 26 agencies from the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) program.  ODCP’s CESF awards represent the first of two rounds of funding for qualified Iowa projects.  Byrne JAG is a yearly grant program benefitting Iowa communities.

“The award of these federal grant funds to support priority needs identified at the local and state levels represents an investment of tax dollars in safer communities,” said ODCP Director Dale Woolery.  “The importance of these resources is underscored by the ongoing impact on Iowans of the coronavirus pandemic and addictive substances, including the illegal trafficking of methamphetamine and other drugs.”

The CESF and Byrne JAG federal grant programs are administered federally by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.

“Among grant-supported initiatives, many involve innovation or collaboration, with an emphasis on technology solutions for coronavirus-related social distancing projects,” said Woolery.  Examples include: county-wide mobile networking for law enforcement agencies and county attorneys; a cloud-based case management system for 19 county attorney offices, in coordination with the Iowa Association of Counties; connectivity between jails and electronic health records; remote court/jail connections; and numerous remote service delivery systems to improve correctional supervision and accountability.
